The prolonged drought continues to generate consequences for the country's economy with respect to the numbers that were achieved after the fall in most of the production. From the Paraguayan Chamber of Sesame Exporters (Capexse) they assure that they feel the negative effect that at the end of the year could worsen with a possible 35% drop in shipments of this product to different countries. In the head of the chamber, Gilberto Ozorio commented that since the previous year they have been experiencing decreases in production due to the drought, but he clarified that in this campaign the fall was quite severe, which would leave a greater effect on the shipment of sesame due to to the lack of product throughout the national territory. According to the data provided by Capexse, the first quarter of 2021 closed with a total export of 4,062 tons of sesame to different countries, which represents a total income of US$6,415,842, while this year the shipment fell with 1,253 tons less with the 2,808 tons exported in this first quarter. This fall represented a negative result of US$ 1,479,910 with respect to the foreign exchange income left by the shipment of this product."The drought affected our projection for this year, we reached a good planting area, around 60,000 hectares of confectionery and some 30,000 hectares of mechanized, which was reduced as the harvest progressed due to the drought. In some cases we had crop losses, especially of the mechanized variety in the Chaco, and in other cases in the confectionery variety, mainly a decrease in yield," said Ozorio. LESS SHIPMENTS The report issued by Capexse points to a greater drop in exports in the first two months of the year, with January being the month with the strongest reduction in shipments, with 48% less compared to the same period of the previous year. February remained almost with the same numbers due to the fact that they registered only 669 tons exported, which represents a drop of 42%, while March was a more considerable period with a 21% decrease in exports compared to the previous year.“What we have is less production to supply the international market this year compared to previous years. At least in the productive commercial part, it benefited from high prices, the producer was suddenly affected by the decrease, but he was able to alleviate something in an interesting way with overpriced, that with respect to what the decrease due to the drought could have affected him, "he added. Ozorio.
