  • Unseasonal rains: 200 acres of sesame fields affected

    About 200 acres of sesame fields in Kurinjipadi were affected due to unseasonal rains in the last few days in Cuddalore district. Sesame is cultivated in areas including Ion Kurinjipadi, Venkatampettai, Odu Agaram, Venkatanguppam, Ellapanpettai, Karunkuzhi and Kannadi near Kurinjipadi.Farmers usually sow sesame directly after harvesting samba paddy and manila in February and March. Sesame was sown in an area of about 800 acres in the present day Kurinjipadi area. About 200 acres of sesame fields were inundated due to rains in the sesame growing areas of cuddalore district in the last few days, thus damaging the sesame seeds.Kurinjipadi Farmers' Association Chairman AK Ramalingam said:Samba Paddy, Manila Sesame will be sown directly in the spring crop after harvest. Sesame is a short-lived plant with a life span of 90 days. The cost of sesame seeds is Rs. 8,000 per acre. The Yield ranges from 5 to 8 bags. After taking into expenses incurred one can get a revenue of INR 25,000 per acre. Sesame seeds were sown at the age of 15 to 45 days after sowing. Sesame seedlings were damaged due to stagnant water in the fields due to unseasonal rains.The same thing happened last year and the year before. Affected sesame fields should be cleared and rye or saplings should be prepared for planting.No compensation has been provided for damage to sesame fields for the last two years. This time the government of Tamil Nadu should provide appropriate compensation.
