Read more Gaya: Sowing of Kharif crops is going on in full swing. If all the work from field preparation to sowing is done on time, then farmers get better income through good yield. Paddy, maize, millet, sorghum and moong are important Kharif crops, but farmers are also showing increasing interest in sesame cultivation. Sesame cultivation is also one of the important Kharif crops, for which fertile land is not required, it can be sown in sandy-loam soil. Sesame cultivation is being done on a large scale in Gaya district of Bihar since last year. Last year, sesame was cultivated in 630 acres, this time Garam sesame is being cultivated in 1300 acres. This time, problems have arisen in the germination of sesame in many block areas of the district. In many places, sesame has not been able to yield well, due to which the farmers are quite worried. Agricultural scientists believe that the reason behind the lack of a good yield of sesame is that the sesame seed is very small and the farmers of this area make the mistake of plowing the fields more than 3 cm while sowing sesame, due to which the yield is not good. According to Dr. Rahul Priyadarshi, agricultural scientist of the Center of Excellence for Coarse Cereals and ICRISAT, farmers cultivating sesame or other coarse cereals must ensure that the ploughing is not done more than 2 cm at the time of sowing. If the ploughing is done more than this, the yield is not good due to the small size of the seeds. Apart from this, it is important to have moisture in the field at the time of sowing. In the initial days, it requires light watering, later less water is required for irrigation. But cultivating it during the Kharif season is very beneficial for the farmers. Usually, sesame is cultivated in the month of July. Use good quality seeds for this crop and seed treatment must be done before sowing. Sow sesame in the field in rows and keep a distance of 30*10 between rows and plants. This will make it easier to weed the crop. Sesame crop does not require much irrigation in this season. Due to sowing in July, its irrigation is met with rain water. Still, in case of less rainfall, irrigation should be given in the fields as per requirement. When the crop is half ripe and ready, then the last irrigation work should be completed. Let us tell you that if sesame is cultivated in one hectare, then 6 to 7 quintals of yield will be obtained. These days its market price is 10-15 thousand rupees per quintal.
