  • Togo: The State wants to attract more investment in the sesame sector

    Jan 30th, 2023

In Togo, experts are working on the implementation of a strategy to attract investments in the Sesame sector, and strengthen competitiveness in this agricultural sub-sector. The Ministry of Investment Promotion and the Ministry in charge of Agriculture are collaborating to this end, within the framework of the Sesame Initiative, with the support of the Investment Climate Reform Facility (ICR). of the German Cooperation (GIZ). A preliminary document was validated in this sense on January 20, during a meeting in the Conference Room of the Ministry for the Promotion of Investment. It is the fruit of a study in two phases: it consisted in the first place, in identifying the challenges of the sesame sector (the lack of structuring of the professions of the sector, the lack of mastery of production techniques by farmers , and the high cost of inputs); and secondly, to write a strategic diagnosis coupled with interviews with various experts in the sector. According to the strategic diagnosis, three main lines of action are already proposed to develop and strengthen the competitiveness of the sector, namely: improving the connection to markets and strengthening partnerships; support for good practices (organic production); and support for primary processing. Following this work, the next step for the task force will be to draft the action plan, with the eventual implementation of a strategy to promote the sector and attract investors to Togo. As a reminder, according to 2019 data, the sesame sector was one of the largest job providers in the agricultural sector in Togo, along with the Soybean and Pineapple sectors.
