Sesame prices across tamil Nadu have soared to record highs due to reduced yields due to summer rains. Due to this, the price of kerosene has also increased significantly.Groundnut, sesame, sunflower and coconut are the major oilseed crops consumed. Essential oil plays an important role in reducing body heat and benefiting the body. Coconut oil is extracted from sesame seeds. Since sesame is an oilseed crop of our country, it cannot be imported from abroad. All over the country, sesame is grown in large quantities only in certain states like tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, madhya pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. In tamil Nadu, only a few areas including Erode, Villupuram, Karur, Trichy and Delta districts are cultivating sesame in various seasons on approximately 1.50 lakh acres annually. This crop, which can be harvested in 85 to 90 days after sowing, does not require much cultivation cost and water. The yield is about 300 to 350 kg per acre. In the last few years, the first grade sesame was sold at a maximum of Rs.120 per kg, while the currently harvested sesame is sold at Rs.140 to Rs.160 per kg. Due to this price hike, the price of kerosene has also gone up significantly. About this, Assistant director of Agriculture Department R. sukumar told ``Hindu Tamil'' newspaper: Sesame is the most profitable crop in short days. As far as tamil Nadu is concerned, sesame seeds are usually sown in the middle of February. They are harvested from the end of May till June. Due to late sowing in some places this year, harvesting will continue till the end of July. However, although the sesame crop benefited in some places due to sudden summer rains last month, the yield decreased due to damage in many places. Sesame indirect auction is held every year at the regulated sale hall in Lalgudi, the largest sesame growing area in Trichy district. So far this year, sesame has been sold in very low quantity. In the auction held in the last 2 weeks, maximum quintal of sesame (100 kg) was sold for Rs.16 thousand. He said that this price is likely to continue for a few more months. Regarding this, Prabha from Trichy gandhi Market Sesame Commission Mandi said: This year sesame is selling between Rs.140 to Rs.160 per kg. Annually, 75 kg bundles are sold for Rs.15,000 to Rs.20,000 at the Trichy Sesame Commission Mandi. But this year, it has not reached even 25 percent. This is because the price is high, so the traders go directly to the villages and purchase sesame from the farmers. Also, the yield has also decreased due to rain damage to the crops. He said that this price will not decrease till the coming diwali festival. The cost of 1 liter of tree oil is Rs.460: Gobu, the manufacturer of tree oil, said: Last year, we purchased sesame for Rs.120 per kg. Currently we are buying quality sesame at Rs.160 per kg. One kg of sesame seeds can yield maximum 600 milliliters of oil when ground into a wooden checker.A little extra in iron checks. At the beginning of january this year, we sold a liter of maracheku essential oil at Rs.380. He said that since the price of sesame has gone up, we are selling it at Rs.460 per litre.
