China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) has established a farm near Lahore in Pakistan for testing the cultivation of sesame. The company is expecting its first harvest next week, with a trial yield of 850-1000 kg per acre.CMEC has dedicated 20 acres of land for sesame cultivation, aimed at assessing the crop’s performance and viability. The testing farm, which was initiated earlier this year, is expected to enhance farming innovation and agricultural cooperation between China and Pakistan. Dai Bao, Vice General Manager of CMEC Pakistan, stated that the company is experimenting with seeds and field management. He expressed hopes of future sesame trading and contract farming to improve sesame yield and trading volume in Pakistan. According to Bao, sesame is flexible in terms of soil adaptability, but thrives best in well-drained soils and upland plains. The production costs per acre are relatively low and comparable to soybean production costs. Fertilizer costs primarily involve nitrogen, which can be obtained from organic sources. Bao also emphasized the rising global demand for sesame seeds, which are increasingly recognized for their health-enhancing properties and application in various dishes. If the testing process proves successful, CMEC plans to introduce modern technology to improve yield and increase sesame exports to China.
