Brazil was the second largest supplier of sesame seeds to India in 2022 The “India – Gergelim” Market Access Study is another edition of a series of publications prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) in partnership with ApexBrasil and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE). The research highlights how Brazil became the second supplier of sesame to India and highlights the requirements for market access. In recent years, trade relations between Brazil and India have deepened. India became the 10th main destination for Brazilian exports in 2022, and Brazil, the 13th main destination for Indian exports. Brazilian exports to the country grew on average 12.7% per year between 2018 and 2022, a rate higher than the average annual growth of 9.6% for the aggregate of Brazilian exports, according to Comex Stat. In 2022, Brazil consolidated itself as the second main country supplying sesame seeds to the Indian market, having exported US$4.3 million (2.7 thousand tons) to the country. Although the Indian market was only opened to the Brazilian product in 2020, India has already figured as the third main destination for Brazilian sesame in 2022. Taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the Indian market to Brazilian sesame depends on compliance with several requirements, such as phytosanitary, safety and quality requirements and labeling. The Brazilian exporter must also comply with specific technical procedures and standards, if applicable. The Study presents details of the sesame export process from Brazil to India and provides information on logistics, marketing, and important fairs in the sector.
