  • Sesame seed shipments rebounded in the first quarter

    May 13th, 2025

Regarding field productivity, they consider it to have been a good year for the confectioner, and they also expect the mechanized variety to yield more than previous harvests. The strengthening of mechanized production and weather conditions during planting and crop development contributed to better results than in the first quarter of 2024. A total of 4,669 tons of sesame seeds were shipped in the first three months of this year, representing revenue of USD 7.8 million FOB. These figures represented a 37% growth in value and a 65% growth in volume. Gilberto Ozorio, from the Paraguayan Chamber of Sesame Exporters (Capexse), explained that this trend was primarily due to planting conditions. In the previous season (2023/2024), planting began late due to unfavorable weather conditions, which impacted the harvest and results. Meanwhile, this season (2024/2025) saw the ideal period, even almost early. "Climatic conditions, in terms of ambient temperature and soil moisture, determine these periods. We always try to plant at an ideal time for seed germination," he explained. Regarding the last season, he noted that the growth of the mechanized sesame sector in the Eastern Region also contributed. "On the one hand, planting in the Eastern Region took place between October and November, which contrasts with previous years, when planting only took place in the Chaco region, starting in December and January. On the other hand, the harvest started earlier than usual," he explained. Regarding field productivity, he believes it was a good year for the confectioner, and the mechanized variety is also expected to yield more than previous harvests. It's still early to talk about results, because the Chaco harvest has yet to be completed, but the outlook is positive. The union sees a "somewhat static" market with a downward trend in prices, due to various factors that have come together at this time of year. "We will be monitoring the market's performance to study the cases and implement commercial strategies to continue exports," he concluded.
