He said that more production can be achieved by using quality seeds, balanced fertilizers and effective control of diseases and pests. He expressed these views while addressing a consultative workshop with the participation of stakeholders on the need for sesame cultivation and value addition in Sahiwal organized by the Agriculture Department Sahiwal. The workshop was organized under the three-year plan to promote sesame, soybean and canola for import substitution and increase exports. Assistant Director Agriculture Dr. Muhammad Aslam gave a briefing on the production technology of sesame crop, in which special emphasis was placed on the selection of varieties, important stages of irrigation, fertilizer application plan, weed control and plant protection measures. Important management steps for better production were also discussed in detail. Deputy Director Agriculture Dr. Tahir Javed highlighted the need for immediate implementation of this project so that sesame exports can be increased. He initiated the discussion for the participants. Initially, representatives of seed companies and dealers highlighted the best varieties of sesame for the Sahiwal region. Farmers pointed out problems like phyllodes and charcoal rot. Experts from the Pest Warning and Quality Control of Pesticides Department answered the questions of the farmers. Dr. Muhammad Aslam also informed about the export of sesame to China. He said that Chinese companies are busy in purchasing sesame and exporting it to China. He also briefly highlighted the quality of sesame, market rate and method of export to China.
