  • Mato Grosso concentrates 58% of sesame production and expands exports.

    Jul 15th, 2026

The survey also mentions actions developed by Sedec to encourage investments in research and seed improvement. Mato Grosso has consolidated its leadership in Brazilian sesame production and is expected to account for 57.7% of the entire national harvest in 2026, according to the most recent Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA), released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on Tuesday (15). The estimate is 210,600 tons produced in the State, in a scenario of expansion of the crop in the country. For the first time, IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) began specifically monitoring sesame in its monthly survey, reflecting the growing importance of this oilseed for Brazilian agriculture. In the document, the institute highlights that Mato Grosso has been consolidating the crop as a strategic alternative for producers, driven by the opening of international markets, adaptation to climatic conditions, and diversification of production. The survey also cites actions developed by the State Secretariat for Economic Development (Sedec), which has encouraged investments in research and seed improvement to increase crop productivity. Another factor pointed out by IBGE is the substitution of corn for sesame in regions where drought occurs earlier, such as Araguaia, taking advantage of the second crop window. Currently, around 99% of the sesame produced in Mato Grosso is destined for export, reinforcing the crop's profile geared towards the international market. Nationally, production was estimated at 364,800 tons in 2026, a 5.7% increase compared to the previous survey, driven by the expansion of the planted area.
